Jiun-Shyan (J.S.) Chen was recognized at the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) 2013 conference as an Inaugural Fellow for his work in computational solid mechanics and multiscale materials modeling. The conference took place Aug. 4-7 at Northwestern University. EMI is a branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers and awards the Inaugural Fellowship to recipients of previous prizes since the institute's founding in 2007, as well as members who served on the executive committee of the former Engineering Mechanics Division or on the Board of Governors of the Engineering Mechanics Institute

Chen is the Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCLA. In addition to teaching in the department, he teaches in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as well as in Department of Mathematics.

The Engineering Mechanics Institute fellowship is the most recent in a long string of honors for Chen, who has also won the Computational Mechanics Award from the International Association for Computational Mechanics and the International Chinese Association for Computational Mechanics Award. He was also president of the U.S. Association for Computer Mechanics from 2010-2012. Chen has also delivered more than 15 plenary lectures and 20 keynote lectures at international conferences.
