The exhibit "Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950" is being co-curated by professor and chair of the UCLA Department of Art Russell Ferguson and is on display at Hirshhorn Museum and Scultpure Garden in Washington, D.C. Media range from photography and found film to paintings, graffiti and machinery.
Ferguson's exhibit explores the theme of destruction, its causes and aftermath, and asks ethical questions about the length to which contemporary artists go to deliver their message. This message is particularly prevalent in photographs depicting artist Ai Weiwei destroying a Chinese vase that's ostensibly thousands of years old to condemn the Chinese government's dismantling of ancient communities and historical cities.
Ferguson co-curated the exhibition with Hirshhorn interim director Kerry Brougher, and the two also compiled a book (which shares a title with the exhibition) on the works on display.
The exhibit runs through May 26, 2014.
