Emeritus professor of education Alexander Astin was presented with the Allen P. Splete Award for Outstanding Service by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) at the annual Presidents Institute held recently in Palm Harbor, Fla. Georgia Nugent, chair of the CIC Board of Directors and president of Kenyon College, and Richard Ekman, president of CIC, presented the awards.
Astin, who is the Allan M. Cartter Professor of Higher Education Emeritus at the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, is the founding director of the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. He has served as director of research for both the American Council on Education and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
President Nugent cited Astin’s “insightful scholarship and the wealth of knowledge that his work has contributed to the field of higher education. Astin’s effective service as a widely cited scholar, prolific author, and creative researcher has made a significant and far-reaching impact on our understanding of the college experience.”
