Dr. Eugene Washington, vice chancellor for health sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, has been honored by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute for his service as the first chair of the institute's board of governors. A new funding program will be named the Eugene Washington Engagement Award, which will support more active integration of patient, stakeholder and research communities during the research process. Washington stepped down as chair of the board in 2013.

The Eugene Washington Engagement Awards will be divided into three areas for funding opportunities: knowledge awards, training and development awards and dissemination awards. The hope is that these awards will help develop a knowledgeable community that is engaged and promote the dissemination of research findings so patients are empowered to make decisions that reflect their desired health outcome.

Washington has earned numerous honors and awards, including the Outstanding Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service, and election to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
