Ali Sayed, professor of electrical engineering and director of the UCLA Adaptive Systems Laboratory, has been awarded the 2013 Meritorious Service Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Signal Processing Society for his "exemplary service to and leadership in the Signal Processing Society."

Sayed has served the broad-signal processing community in various capacities. Among other roles, he served as editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing (2003-2005), general chairman of the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in 2008 — the largest conference in the field — and vice president of publications of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2009-2011).

During his term as vice president of  publications, he made a concerted effort to exploit the power of the electronic medium. His board launched several initiatives, including the digital edition of the IEEE SP Magazine, which is now broadcast electronically to all SP members. In 2010-2011, the publication was ranked No. 1as the journal with the highest impact factor among all electrical engineering publications worldwide.

Sayed will receive the award at a ceremony in May 2014 in Florence, Italy. For more information, visit UCLA Engineering.
