Roberto Peccei, particle theorist and former UCLA vice chancellor for research, is one of the this year's recipients of the  J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics.

The Sakurai prize, presented by the American Physical Society, honors outstanding achievement in particle physics theory. It's being awarded to Peccei  for his "proposal of the elegant mechanism to resolve the famous problem of strong-CP violation which, in turn, led to the invention of axions, a subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation for more than three decades."

Considered one of the most prestigious in physics, the prize was endowed in 1984 as a memorial to and in recognition of the accomplishments of the late particle physicist J. J. Sakurai by the family and friends. The award ceremony will take place Thursday, April 11 from 4 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. at the Physics Astronomy building, room 1425. A reception will follow directly after the ceremony.
