An installation by pioneering digital media artist Jennifer Steinkamp, a UCLA professor of design and media arts, will open at Virginia Tech on Oct. 28. Known for her breathtaking installations of computer-generated, projected imagery, Steinkamp created "Madame Curie," a multi-channel, synchronized 55-foot-wide, floor-to-ceiling projection of swirling flowers that sweep across the gallery wall in a continuous cycle of dynamic movement.

The famed scientist Marie Curie (1867–1934) was an avid gardener so Steinkamp chose to portray the blossoms in this piece from a list of flowering plants in Curie's garden. Steinkamp recreates them on the computer, entirely out of code, juxtaposing the organic and inorganic, and the real and unreal. To see the piece, go here.
