Professor of education Carlos Alberto Torres has been elected as the new president of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies.
 
He has served the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the administering organization of the Fulbright Scholar Program, as CIES president from 1994 to 1998 and as a member of its board of directors.
 
Torres is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a corresponding member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and director of the Paulo Freire Institute at UCLA. He was awarded the 2012-13 Fellowship of the Sudikoff Family Institute for Education and New Media at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS).
 
Torres received the GSE&IS Department of Education’s Distinguished Teaching Award for 2011-2012. Most recently, he was recognized by Online Schools in California as one of the "Top 20 Education Professors in California."
