R. Edward Geiselman, professor of psychology at UCLA, will receive the Mary Ellen McCormack Award April 26 from the L.A. Sheriff's Department for his lifetime contributions to the prevention and investigation of child abuse.
Geiselman has worked with the department on developing effective techniques for interviewing children who may have been molested. He has also worked with law enforcement for many years on putting together effective training programs and developing with Ronald Fisher, a former UCLA psychologist now at Florida International University, a "cognitive interview" that works well with both criminal suspects and eyewitnesses of crimes.
The award is named after a badly abused child in 19th century New York who was rescued and whose assailant was brought to justice.
