Robert Fink, UCLA professor of musicology, was honored with the Outstanding Publication Award from the Popular Music Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory for his article, "Goal Directed Soul: Analyzing Rhythmic Teleology in African American Popular Music."
The group promotes the scholarly study of popular music through methods, including musical analysis and theory. They aim to ensure academic recognition for popular music research and encourage scholars of popular music to make effective use of musical analysis and theory.
The article was originally published in the Journal of the American Musicological Society, in which Fink is the only scholar to have published articles on topics within both the popular and classical traditions.
