Computer simulation of a wake produced by an intense electron bunch as it passes through an ionized gas from the top left to the bottom right. The electric fields of the wake are hundreds of times larger than in a conventional particle accelerators and are used here to accelerate a second trailing bunch of electrons while maintaining its narrow energy spread.
