Spring Silkworms"Spring Silkworms," an 80-year-old Chinese film regarded as one of the first successful attempts to weave progressive politics into Chinese popular cinema, will be shown this Sunday at the Billy Wilder Theater at the UCLA Hammer Museum as part of the A Century of Chinese Cinema series. The film series runs through Dec. 13 and is presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies and the UCLA Confucius Institute. Directed by Cheng Bugao, "Spring Silkworms" is as noted for its revolutinoary spirit as it is for its attention to the details of rural life. The story follows a humble silk-farming family struggling to free themselves of debt owed to exploitative middlemen. The screening is scheduled for 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20 and will be followed by a showing of "The Big Road." Tickets are $10. For more information.
