james conlon retfinaMaestro James Conlon, music director of the LA Opera and the 2013 UCLA Regents' Lecturer, will give a series of public lectures on Verdi and Wagner, "Struggle, Success, and Mastery: Romantic Opera in Three Acts," at the Hammer Museum Feb. 19, Feb. 21 and March 7. The talks will begin at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Conlon will teach a master class on March 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Popper Theater in Schoenberg Hall. Singers from LA Opera's Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program and Opera UCLA will present 19th-century operatic selections. All of these events are free and open to the public. They are sponsored by the departments of Comparative Literature and Musicology, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Opera UCLA and the UC regents. An undergraduate course will be taught in conjunction with the lecture series.
