UCLA Arts supporter and UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music principle donor Herb Alpert was awarded the National Medal of Arts Award by President Obama on July 11 for his lifetime contributions to the arts. Alpert is best known as the trumpet player for his group, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, and as the "A" of A&M Records, a recording label established with partner Jerry Moss. Both a philanthropist and eight–time Grammy-winning performer, Alpert is recognized for his desire to improve society, his passion for music and arts education and, most notably, his ability to traverse the stereotypical divides of his art form.
