Locks of Love 2014

The opportunity to contribute to the lives of children, coupled with stylish haircuts provided free of charge, drew a crowd of Bruins and members of the UCLA community today to UCLA’s 7th annual Locks of Love hair donation event at James West Alumni Center. A nonprofit organization, Locks of Love turns the donated tresses into hairpieces that are given to financially disadvantaged children who have lost hair due to medical illness, helping them regain confidence.

Hosting the daylong event was UCLA’s Alumni Scholars Club, which keeps Bruins connected through a variety of activities to enrich alumni members, serve the community and support young Bruins with scholarships. Providing the free haircuts were Vidal Sassoon student stylists and teacher-supervisors.

Among those who shared their hair — 10 inches each —  were UCLA alumna Laura Lebron and her daughter, 7-year-old Katie (pictured). Waiting patiently was Lebron's 10-year-old, Maggie, who donated last year when her mother first learned of the opportunity.

Asked if she will find it easier to deal with 30 inches less hair between the three of them, Laura laughed, “Definitely!”

Locks of Love received almost 1,700 inches of hair from 144 donors at this year's event.
