Scent concertThe Hammer Museum will be the location for a scent concert performed by the Los Angeles-based Institute for Art and Olfaction doing its interpretation of a scent concert put on in 1902 by German Japanese poet, artist and critic Sadakichi Hartmann, who was also known as the "king of bohemians." The concert was originally designed to offer an olfactory voyage from New York to Japan. The original concert, billed as the penultimate act in a popular burlesque music and comedy series, failed because of tobacco smoke and boisterous crowds. In the institute's concert, scheduled Jan. 9-12, scents will be released into the room in time to an original sound track by Bennett Barbakow and live Foley elements by Julia Owen — the whole production elucidated in a limited edition program by Micah Hahn. Participants will be blindfolded so that they can enjoy an immersive olfactory experience that will take them from modern-day Los Angeles to Tokyo. Tickets may be reserved beginning Dec. 1 at 10 a.m.
