After 41 years of teaching, distinguished professor of urban planning Donald Shoup — the man who literally wrote the bible of parking policy — is on the verge of retirement. As such an influential figure in urban planning ciricles, many have wanted to say thanks and farewell. To accommodate the well-wishers, staff at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, created a pair of “Flat Shoups” — life-sized cardboard cutouts of Shoup holding his seminal book, “The High Cost of Free Parking.” Students and fans of Shoup (fondly called “Shoupistas”) have been encouraged to post a picture with “Flat Shoup” and tag @UCLALuskin or #imwithshoup on their Twitter or Instagram accounts.

In addition to becoming a bit of a thing, the “Flat Shoups” are also part of fundraising campaign for an endowed fellowship in Shoup’s name. With more than $50,000 raised ahead of a departmental retirement celebration May 30, which will be held in Lot 32, the Donald and Pat Shoup Endowed Fellowship in Urban Planning is gearing up to support the next generation of urban planning students.

Here are just some of the Shoupistas with the cardboard likeness of their hero.
