UCLA’s annual bike week is in full swing, offering regular cyclists and the bike-curious three “pit stops” from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with free food, bike tune-ups and cycling gear.

Bike week and the pit stops encourage Bruins to consider two-wheeled transportation. It’s a healthier way to commute, and not just because it provides riders with daily exercise, said Dave Karwaski, a senior associate director for UCLA Transportation. It also improves air quality and traffic.

“We want people to know that the university supports and encourages bicycling,” Karwaski said.

New bike lanes on Westwood Plaza, which will be installed soon, further support that message. Weather permitting, UCLA Transportation plans to re-stripe Westwood Plaza from Le Conte Boulevard to Charles E. Young Drive with a new north-south bike lane on Saturday, May 23. The bike lane is scheduled to be completed on the rest of Westwood Plaza, from Young Drive to the Luskin Conference Center, in spring 2016.

“These facilities both to enhance safety and encourage people to bicycle,” Karwaski said.

Bike week wraps up on Thursday, May 14 with a free event featuring pressed juice, giveaways, and T-shirts and lunch for those who register here. The lunch takes place 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the North Athletic Field.
