In Memoriam: UCLA Film and Television Archive’s Charles Hopkins

Charles HopkinsCharles Hopkins, the longest-serving employee at UCLA Film and Television Archive, died on July 27 at 69 from a number of health complications. He started at the archive as a student volunteer in 1971.

"Over his long career there was not a single job at the Archive Charles did not do at one point or another," said archive Director Jan-Christopher Horak in a tribute to Hopkins. "In the early years especially, Charles played a major role in virtually every Archive project. "

Above all, he was a lover of cinema. "We spent many hours in the office discussing either the newest films out on the town, Charles usually being up to date on such matters, or classic Hollywood films, where he was also extremely knowledgeable, always pointing me to sources that I was not aware of," Horak said.

As the decades moved on, Hokins became less involved in programming, but kept his hand in with the ongoing series, "Archive Treasures," which launched in October of 1990. With "Archive Treasures," he researched and curated individual screenings that recreated the classic "night at the movies" experience that audiences enjoyed during the heyday of the Hollywood era: newsreel, cartoon, short subject and feature film.

Beginning in October, the archive will reprise "Archive Treasures" screenings, exactly as Hopkins originally curated them. His film motes will also be used. "I'm hopeful that by the end of this program, those who didn't have the opportunity to know Charles personally will feel that they now know not only quite a bit about his contributions to film culture, but perhaps also a bit about the man behind the films," Horak said.
