In Memoriam: Stella Nadelman Krieger, manager of the Fowler Museum Store

Stella Nadelman Krieger, manager of the Fowler Museum Store who made it popular stop because of the unique, handcrafted items from around the world she displayed there, died Nov. 21 in Los Angeles at age 75 from cancer.

A Los Angeles native and 1960 graduate of UCLA, Krieger developed a passion for collecting with her husband, Dr. Fred Krieger. Early in 1970s, they began building an important collection of art and objects that included Mexican silver jewelry, beaded handbags, and rugs and textiles from Asia, the Middle East, Guatemala, Mexico and other countries.

Stella Krieger 04-prvFrom 1994–2005 she was the museum store manager of the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. Since 2007 Stella has been the manager of the museum store at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, where she was a cherished member of the staff who will be greatly missed, her colleagues said. Many of her selections were related to the African, Native and Latin American, and Asian/Asian-Pacific art exhibitions that are the focus of the Fowler Museum.

In a UCLA Today story written by Wendy Soderburg in 2010, Krieger said, "I love my job, and I feel inspired to be here. The museum is wonderful, and the people I work with are very special, talented people. And, of course, working in an atmosphere with great art — well, I feel very lucky about that!"

In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by her children, Lauren Krieger of Santa Monica, Spencer Krieger of South Pasadena, Terry Krieger of Long Beach and Alissa Krieger-DeWitt of Truro, Mass.; and brother Seymour Nadelman. She had nine grandchildren.
