Richard Artschwager2The Hammer Museum's current exhibition, "Richard Artschwager!," presents 150 sculptures, paintings and drawings that showcase the extraordinary breadth of subject matter and form of Artschwager's practice. Organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in association with the Yale University Art Gallery, this traveling exhibition was recently hailed by Los Angeles Times art critic Christopher Knight. "He is the rare artist who is adept at creating paintings and sculptures, as a traveling retrospective at the UCLA Hammer Museum shows," Knight said of Artschwager. Looking slightly off-kilter, the 1964 sculpture, "Description of a Table" (above), made of plywood covered with Melamine laminate, is one example of what Knight calls Artschwager's "eye- and mind-bending paintings and sculptures" that "cement his reputation as a major artist shaking up a pivotal era." On view until Sept. 1.
