Zombies, even more than handsome vampires, are ubiquitous in today’s pop culture, from hit TV shows to video games. But did you that the zombi actually comes to us from the Vodou culture of Haiti? Join the Fowler Museum at UCLA on Thursday, Jan. 17, for “The Walking Dead: Zombies in Haitian Vodou and Contemporary Popular Culture,” a roundtable discussion about the origins of these monsters in the Haitian belief system and modern zombie culture. The discussion, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Fowler Museum auditorium, features panelists Max Brooks (author of The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead and World War Z); Anna Creagh, teaching associate in UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance; and Patrick Polk, co-curator of the related exhibition "In Extremis: Death and Life in 21st-Century Haitian Art" and the Fowler's curator of Latin American and Caribbean popular arts.
